Dan Schuster - whimsical wooden sculptures
Reclamation Sculpture by artist Dan Schuster

Crafting sculptures out of shipping pallets and other vintage lumber, Iowa native Dan Schuster puts a new spin on folk art.

Dan Schuster isn’t just an artist; he’s also an art director, graphic designer, advertiser, husband and father. When he first began sculpting his folk-art creations in 1995, his analytical side had him wondering why people buy what they do at certain ages. So his art functioned as sort of an experiment: “I wanted to create something that appealed to a wide audience,” Dan says. In doing so, he not only created a popular product, but also one that encapsulates different facets of his life. In tribute to his self-proclaimed dry sense of humor, a one-liner adorns each sculpture. And their vintage, worn look is testament to his love of Old World aesthetics. What started as an experiment has blossomed into gallery exhibits a spotlight editorial in Log Home Living magazine and even a segment on HGTV.

Dan tries to choose wood with a worn look to it. He primarily uses shipping pallets, but also works with leftover furniture or scraps from manufacturing plants. “With shipping pallets, there’s a history that comes with it.” Dan says. “And part of the art is the hidden history.”

Prices vary based on size and complexity, but pieces generally range from $75 to $500. For more information, call 319-362-9009 or visit danschusterdesigns.com

Caitlin Capper – woven baskets
Neighbor to Fireside Winery, Caitlin is a 15 year old who enjoys weaving baskets in her free time.  She started weaving in the summer of 2005 at College 4 Kids at Coe College.

Dori Stanek – handmade rugs

Sue Welty – handmade crocheted items

Jane Easterbrook of Fat Cat D’sign - primitive stone and silver wire wrap
My work is primarily stone and silver wire wrap. The stone is predrilled. I use a cold forge method with wrapping of half hard silver wire gauges from 22 to 16. I use free form for pendants and a large variety of stones: amethyst, fossil stone, different quartz. Also the bead weaving, which is free form(not loomed) is created by my sister Kathie McClellan. These are of original patterns and designs. All pieces are unique, never duplicated. I design earrings, pendants, bracelets, necklaces and watches.

My background is not as an artist. I am a nurse in the prison system of Iowa. I am self taught and have been creating art for many years, having formed Fat Cat Dsign 2 years ago. I attend mostly art shows but do commission pieces and private galleries.

Barbara Jones Prall – oil paintings
As an award-winning Iowa artist of impressionist work, Iowa landscapes, and portraits, Barb continues to have numerous one-person shows, which have delighted art lovers and collectors for over forty years.  Over 90% of her work has been commissioned and her artwork has been shipped to six continents.  Whatever the subject, style or medium she works, Barb’s goal is to express a positive vie of life by celebrating beauty and joy in creation.  Barb’s gallery and teaching studio is located near downtown Marion.

Belinda Starling  - oil paintings

Greg Fischer – photography and oil painting
South Amana Granary: Home of Fischer Fine Art Gallery and Studio

The South Amana Granary, one of the Nation's Historic buildings located in the Amana Colonies of Northeastern Iowa, was originally built in 1865 to house the grain for the entire village. Continuing in that spirit of sharing for the common good The Granary has undergone renovations from its' former state as an antique store into a fine art gallery and studio space which will soon feature art works created by the students from the Fine Art programs of local Universities in addition to the varied art works of Artist

Gregory Fischer.  For the past ten years Greg has been focusing on photographing human impacted landscapes with medium and large format cameras outputting in both traditional and digital prints. However, having started as an oil painter Greg admits to usually having a canvas on the easel in some varying stage of progress.
